Brown Bag Lunch Series

by the Marketing Department

The Professional Business Systems Program at Laurus College teaches students how to succeed in business, whether it’s working for an established organization or creating a company of their own.

For the past few weeks, our Professional Business Systems Department has been hosting a series of workshops during Friday lunch hours, to help students with professional development in areas of marketing, presentation techniques, and industry standard tools.

In case you missed these workshops, we have provided a brief synopsis of the topics covered below.

“The Fight or Flight of Stage Fright”

Lynda Mondragon, Instructor from the Professional Business Systems Department, discussed the importance of conquering your fears of stage fright when presenting in front of others. Many adults today still consider public speaking to be their biggest fear compared to flying, sickness, or financial ruin. As humans, we’re all hardwired to worry about our reputation which derives from the most primitive parts of our brains that control reaction to threats to our reputation, causing us to feel anxious, nervous, and afraid of failure.

To help overcome the fear of stage fright, you should remember these 3 tips for your next presentation.

Practice makes Perfect. Prepare for your presentation by creating 3×5 cards with talking points, record yourself to listen for areas of improvement, and go through a practice run with a friend or family member. This will help you to memorize the most important topics of your presentation.

Remember to Breathe. Learn to control your breathing by making sure you breathe low and slow. This will help to calm your heart and provide enough oxygen throughout your body. Controlled breathing allows you to deliver an evenly paced speech, which gives off a calm and collected look to others.

Think Positive. Always visualize yourself succeeding before the presentation. You will perform much better when you think positive thoughts about how things will go. If you can imagine it, you can do it!

“Creation with Canva”

During this workshop, Rebecca Ingrahm, Professional Business Systems Instructor, explained the importance of content marketing and showed students how to use the program Canva, to create a quote of the day template and a simple infographic.

Canva is an easy-to-use design tool that requires very little knowledge about graphic design in order to get started. Students can use this tool to create modern, eye-catching designs which can then be used for marketing purposes.

Content Marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent information to attract and retain a clearly defined audience to ultimately drive profitable customer action. Creating content is incredibly important and challenging for businesses. With Canva, students can take this information gained and begin to help solve this problem for the companies they work for or own.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the next Brown Bag Lunch Series workshop on Friday, October 23, at 1:00pm. The Professional Business Systems Department Chair, Melanie Bryant, will be speaking on ways to launch a personal blog!
